The following is a sample of info and a few quotes from @myseatosky Call-to-Action on their website.

Unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and səlilwətaɬ territories (VANCOUVER, BC) — In the wake of last summer’s deadly heatwave and unprecedented fires, today, nearly 200 organizations representing well over one million British Columbians – a diverse network of environmental, Indigenous, labour, health, business, faith, and youth groups – joined in a call to the BC government to fundamentally reboot its CleanBC plan and implement a genuine and transformative climate emergency plan.

Their open letter – “An Urgent Call to the BC Government to Confront the Climate Emergency” – calls on the government to demonstrate the necessary leadership and immediately undertake 10 bold emergency actions. “Simply put, CleanBC does not sufficiently address the severity of the climate crisis,” said Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, president of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs. “The allowances for dirty emissions from the fossil fuel sector and forestry will increase the deadly and devastating impacts that communities across the province and the world are experiencing, and are not going to help us pay for a just transition to a clean economy. The Province must fully accept that they need to come up with an alternative economy because we aren’t going to achieve a clean BC with dirty fossil fuels.”

“Emergencies require responses that look, sound and feel to the public like genuine emergency plans,” said Seth Klein team lead with the Climate Emergency Unit. “The current BC approach doesn’t do that. It is lacking in ambition, urgency and coherence. The 10 actions in this open letter would constitute a real crisis response.”

Shell has announced the highest profits in 115 years - a mere $39.9 Billion. Oh and paid zero windfall tax and no tax at all in the UK for 5 years.

The oil and gas giants are literally raking in billions in ‘record profits’ while millions of people are pushed into poverty.

Shell’s profits alone would be enough to give every nurse and teacher in the UK a pay rise in line with inflation. But our leaders choose zero tax and incentives to encourage more oil and gas drilling. #MakeShellPay

Our dependence on fossil fuels is the cause of this energy crisis and it has to stop!

The oil and gas giants should have started too #Decarbonise in the 80s. We can’t afford to wait any longer for them to do the right thing - for our pockets or the planet.

These portions are only 17.9% of the total amount that BCI invests with 11 pooled public pensions. So the numbers are much higher… Our pension manager is a Monster fossil fuel company themselves. They have no interest in divesting from fossil fuels. And as our pension board trustees have a lovely working relationship with BCI it’s going to take us, teachers standing up and fighting for this. Fighting for the future of the children of the world and of life for humans on this planet.

At the 2022, AGM teachers voted for fossil fuel divestment from our pension.

Could eco-anxiety transform the field of psychology?

Nowadays, the threat of eco-distress—a term medical professionals use to describe the wide range of emotions people feel about the climate crisis—has become undeniable. As more people across the world are struggling with how to cope, mental health services are trying to keep up.

With climate change—and the many systemic issues that exacerbate it—mental health practitioners are having to re-evaluate their field at large. Taking action may not only look like doing what’s best for ourselves but challenging the systems that made us feel that way in the first place.

For The Frontline, @melissa_godin talks with the @climate.psychology.alliance about addressing eco-distress in our current mental health paradigm. Full story at the link in our bio.

Dr. Heather Short has been teaching geology, earth Dr. Heather Short has been teaching geology, earth system science and climate science for 25 years focussing on the present human caused climate and ecological crisis for off over the past 15 years. She designed and taught the only climate science course at the QC college system.

She became frustrated by the dissonance of teaching young people about the climate emergency in the context of a world that is still largely in denial about the urgency, with which we need to act on to mitigate it, that she resigned from her tenured position as an act of conscientious objection to educational business as usual with a ‘green’ twist. - look her up she wrote an article for CBC.

Dr. Short has created a Climate Literacy course, and she is endeavouring to educate the “adults in the room” – those of us who have the political and economic agency to take meaningful action to avoid the worst consequences of climate breakdown.

Like any other literacy, as inhabitants on this earth, we must become climate literate. We all must understand the science, the language and what we must do to mitigate the worst affects of climate catastrophe. Climate literacy is also important so we are able to judge whether the “solutions“ offered us are appropriate.

The climate, an ecological, crisis and emergencies are the biggest existentialism threats to human civilization and the natural world that we have ever faced. This requires immediate and collective action to give us any kind of chance at a liveable world in the coming decades.

It is absolutely imperative, that every citizen in a democracy, understand the scale and urgency of the actions that need to be taken.

All of the information I have written here has come straight from Dr. Short’s website.

So we must immediately begin transition off of fossil fuels and change how we are using the land, with agriculture and stop all animal factory farming. We have to stop with the pesticides and use already known ways of farming and managing crop success by nurturing healthy soil etc.
Daily, forests are decimated and degraded everywhere for logging and mass animal agriculture. There are other options rather than clearcutting forests and definitely no more clear cutting old-growth forests and ancient Mother trees. The ocean is in dying!! We have to stop mass trawler fishing and clean the ocean up from all the pollution in plastic and garbage poisoning it.

Humans, we must stop cutting, killing, and poisoning everything in Nature on land and in water so we can continue living the way we have been and have the stuff that we want and feel we need to live our lives. -wealth must be distributed among all and we should have no billionaires and millionaires …def not in control of our food systems, energy systems and communication systems, etc.

We have to envision a new way of living an existing on this planet, that is in balance with nature, equitable and fair to all living beings.

Look folks, you you need to accept that radical change is coming whether you want it or not. Better that as an organized human global society we can make decisions to mitigate the worst effects of climate chaos, so we still have a liveable planet.

Humans have made it this far because we have the ability to adapt.

We must all commit to being part of this change by getting into an emergency mode right now! And then move into regeneration mode afterwards.

We must unite on mass to apply pressure on governments to make bold decisions needed to make use of this very small window of opportunity.

BCI is a #fossilfuel company. They are even invested in fossil fuel companies that are listed in our BCTF pension portfolio...

At the 2022 AGM teachers voted on a motion to divest from fossil fuels from our Pension Funds
for which our money contributed to $582,389,190 million in the past year.

Quite a responsible action given fossil fuels is causing the climate crisis, ecological collapse and mass extinction. I might add here the fossil fuel era is coming to an end, the more intense, the climate crisis becomes the more the world will become, forced to get off fossil fuels-leaving those assets stranded anyways.

Can you imagine if teachers used $582,389,190 million to invest in sustainable, low energy, restorative, regenerative companies that are going to transition us into a better and liveable future?

That’s why the climate crisis is such a monumental task because everybody seems to be sticking to the status quo maintaining what we’ve always been doing… decades invested in fossil fuels.
This needs to change now!

@bcteachersfederation let’s be #ClimateLeaders and instruct our BCTF Pension Board to begin divestment,

🌍 Last year I visited a number of schools and universities teaching about how to cope with climate anxiety, and a common misconception among young people is that there’s something ‘wrong’ with them - which couldn’t be further from the truth.

Climate anxiety is normal. It’s a healthy response to the planetary crisis we are facing, and can even be good for the planet as it increases pro-environmental behaviour and people’s level of activism. But this depends largely on where you live, what is accessible to you, and the level of information you’re exposed to.

This is why climate education is so important. While it can be difficult to face the truth of how much we’ve harmed our planet, leaning into those emotions, honouring them and putting them into action can make a huge difference.

It’s also so important to recognise that climate anxiety is not a western phenomenon. People around the world have been experiencing mental health issues as the result of extreme weather events for decades, but have been left out of media narratives and face barriers to engaging in climate action - from limited resources to anti-protest laws which make activism unsafe for many.

If you’re struggling with climate anxiety, the @climate.psychology.alliance have some really good resources and offer a limited number of free therapy sessions to activists. Please seek professional help if you feel like you can’t cope with climate anxiety - personally I’m starting therapy this year to deal with the pressure of being a full-time climate campaigner, and there is absolutely no shame in this 💚

How do you deal with climate anxiety?
