BC teachers are invested through their pension in AMAZON for $66.77 million • Amazon has signed on with Google to Project Nimbus, a US$1.22 billion project that will contribute to the Palestinian Genocide by Israel.

And Amazon has been making workers work longer hours in poor conditions for lower wages and increasing Co2 emissions year after year in order to earn more profit since setting its net zero goal.

We take action against Amazon for genocide, low wages for workers, and environmental destruction by blocking their most profitable Black Friday operation.

Scotia Bank owns the largest foreign share in Isra

Scotia Bank owns the largest foreign share in Israeli weapons manufacturer ELBIT SYSTEMS totalling $500 million. Following the money trail, we learn our BC teachers pay is also funding murder and genocide via our investment in Scotia bank through our teachers pension.

British Columbia investment management corporation (BCI) has invested 11 BC public pensions, including our teachers pension in Scotiabank for over $287.94 million.

Fixed income:
-Bank of Nova Scotia
-Scotia Capital - it is not clear how much money is invested…

Public Equities:
-Bank of Nova Scoita (287.94) <- BCI total

BCTF union president, @bctfjohnston has just made a statement at least privately within our union calling on a cease-fire. However, this holds little weight when our pension investments are actually supporting this genocidal war against this Palestinian people.

This is a powerful interview on Israel by a leading US expert on racism and apartheid that I want to recommend to everybody.

It includes deeply personal testimony and profound analysis by the great US writer Ta-Nehisi Coates about how Israel has an apartheid system of governance that discriminates against Palestinians and non-Jews. Coates recounts some harrowing experiences from his visit to Israel’s occupied territories several months ago. US citizens in particular are often denied information from our media outlets about how Israel’s treatment of non-Jews is discriminatory and to a great degree mirrors what happened to blacks in the US during the Jim Crow era. Coates is a leading expert on the history of US racism and his groundbreaking article in @theatlantic in 2014 remains in my view the best and most comprehensive case for reparations for US slavery and racism ever published.

Almost every major global human rights organization in the western world, including @amnesty and Human Rights Watch as well as several human rights groups within Israel, have documented that Israel maintains an apartheid system of governance. Apartheid is an international crime. A country can’t claim to be a democracy and at the same time impose an apartheid system of governance. RBC funds Palantir, a surveillance tech company used against Palestinians in the West Bank. As students, we refuse to work for a company that funds colonization. RBC funds genocide, from Wet’suwet’en territory to the West Bank. RBC you have blood on your hands!

♦️I would include the avoidance behaviour and flat out dismissive attitude of the current BCTF union president @bctfjohnston as also participating in climate delay. He has not lobbied our pension board of trustees to begin divestment, and so far has not made a plan for full divestment by 2028. As well, our pension board of trustees and our pension managers, BCI, have told us they believe divestment is not an effective strategy for addressing long-term and persistent, environmental, social and governance risks - nonsense!

In fact, each member has lost money ($17,000) since 2010 because we continue to invest in fossil fuels.

Teachers voted to divest our pension plan from oil, coal and gas. And these three bodies; our union executives, our pension board of trustees and our pension managers, BCI, continue to take no action to begin.

It’s our money and our union is supposed to work for us!

Repost @stevendonziger THERE is a dangerous development in the campaign to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for damage caused by climate change.

While the war between Israel and Hamas consumes the world's attention, the fossil fuel industry is quietly working to delay and sabotage legal proceedings in the US to hold it accountable for its leading role in creating global warming. There are about 25 legal cases pending in US courts brought by cities and states against the oil majors and the industry lobbying group The American Petroleum Institute.

The fossil fuel industry's latest gambit is to try to dismiss these cases by arguing the industry is not responsible for the massive damage caused by climate change because it had no "duty to warn" the public. Industry lawyers cynically claim oil companies had no "duty to warn" because knowledge of climate change was available decades ago -- even though oil majors like Chevron and Exxon tried to deceive the public by hiding that very information. They did this by suppressing their own internal scientific research pointing to inevitable and drastic climate change, while at the same time paying lobbyists at front groups like the Heartland Institute to create "uncertainty" about the issue in public.

A mastermind of the new industry legal strategy is none other than Ted Boutrous of Gibson Dunn, the same fossil fuel law firm Chevron paid to orchestrate my private corporate prosecution after we helped Indigenous peoples in Ecuador's Amazon win a historic $10 billion pollution judgment. Boutrous also represents the New York Times in its media and First Amendment work – a clear conflict of interest for the newspaper which might help explain why it never covered Chevron's orchestration of my illegal 993-day detention in retaliation for winning the Ecuador pollution case. Boutrous himself was intimately involved in the targeting of me and the affected Amazon communities of Ecuador.

BC teachers pension is invested in all of them, dirty banks, including RBC….. mortifying…I’ll note here that our BC teachers union president @clintjohnston has never made a public statement that teachers voted for motions at our AGM to divest from fossil fuels. (a) He has not lobbied our pension board to divest from fossil fuels, and (b) so far we have not heard of any plan that he has made with union executives to be fully divested by 2028. Our pension investments are engaged in ongoing colonialism against Indigenous people and ecological collapse.
